To help you see the bigger picture, let’s break down the official VTCT Skills Pathway (see below), which maps out how to progress in the beauty or aesthetics industry.

If you’re interested in starting a holistic therapy business such as basic facials and massage treatments, then your starting point is the VTCT Level 2 in Facial Massage & Skincare. Following that, your next progression would be to complete the VTCT Level 3 in Beauty Therapy General which entails all the massage, facial and body electrical elements.

If you want to become a skin specialist and mainly focus on skin treatments, then your starting point is the VTCT Level 3 in Access to Aesthetic Therapies, this qualification was designed for students who do not wish to perform massage treatments, but rather work on facial elements such as basic facials and electrical facials.

Once you have achieved a Level 3 qualification, the pathway then allows you to progress towards level 4 qualifications upwards.

At Elixir Skin Training, we have designed our own pathway for becoming a qualified skin specialist. We work with two awarding organisations that offer Ofqual Regulated Qualifications, they are VTCT and Focus Awards. Our pathway to becoming a qualified skin specialist uses VTCT for the Level 3 qualifications and Focus Awards for the Level 4 Qualifications. This pathway allows us to offer tailored courses to our learners.
