The government is introducing a licensing scheme to ensure the safety and quality of these procedures. This means that practitioners will need to meet specific standards to obtain a practitioner and premises license. So, what does all of this mean?
The Beauty & Aesthetics industry in England is mainly unregulated for all non-surgical cosmetic procedures, this means that anyone looking to offer treatments that are classed as non-surgical can complete CPD accredited courses as a minimum to be classed as skilled and then they can proceed in offering treatments. At current, practitioners do not require Ofqual Regulated Qualifications in Beauty or Aesthetics.
CPD courses are classed as Continuing Professional Development which means you learn a new skill and your skill has been reviewed by an organisation that assesses professional standards. CPDs are usually done to enhance existing qualifications, provide recognition for ongoing skill development or shows commitment to professional learning. CPD courses can range from half a day to 5 days in total depending on whether you learn one new skill or a number of new skills over a period of a week.

Are there limitations to CPD courses? Yes, more and more insurance companies have stopped accepting CPD accreditation, CPDs are not government regulated meaning CPD accreditation does not appear on national frameworks such as Ofqual and CPDs won’t meet future licencing requirements.
What is Ofqual? Ofqual stands for the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) and they are a government body that regulates qualifications in England. This means that Ofqual regulated qualifications meet national educational and assessment standards which leads to a recognised qualification. Who recognises Ofqual? Employers, local councils and insurance providers.
Who accredits Ofqual Regulated Qualifications? Organisations such as VTCT, Focus Awards and City & Guilds are all approved to offer Beauty & Aesthetics qualifications. The benefits of doing Ofqual Regulated Qualifications are to ensure that practitioner are qualified, their qualification is legally recognised in the UK and sometimes internally, it meets local council and insurance requirements, but most importantly it futureproof practitioners for when the regulation do come in.
